WHAT WE DO – INDIGENOUS EMPLOYEE PROGRAM

NORRiC is committed to the growth of the Indigenous population into meaningful, full time employment within the Mining, Oil & Gas sectors. With the development of a program to assist employees and employers better understand the needs of each individual to create a more productive work place for both parties.

This program involves our mentors coaching individuals in the achievements full time employment brings and the benefits to them and their community. Mentoring is a very effective way to retain Indigenous staff and reduce turnover rates, particularly in the first year of employment. This mentoring process by which an employee receives support and guidance from one of our experienced coaches. It helps a new employee to settle in and succeed in their job.

Each Mentor has:

  • A good knowledge of Indigenous culture
  • Be able to communicate positively with Indigenous people in a culturally sensitive manner
  • Suitable work/life experience that can assist and benefit an Indigenous employee

Through the assistance of partnering Indigenous organisations, NORRiC is able to better understand the cultural & healing needs of the Indigenous people along with education of these aspects of the Non-Indigenous population of Australia. Cross cultural awareness training will give your staff a better understanding of Indigenous life in contemporary Australia and help them to find ‘common ground’ with their Indigenous co-workers. It will also alert them to the different ways in which Indigenous and non-Indigenous people communicate. This will help to reduce misunderstanding that sometimes arise between Indigenous staff, their co-workers, supervisors and managers.

To help the individual become job ready and also assist them with any personal or company grievances that may hamper their work balance. NORRiC will meet with Indigenous staff to find out why they like working for your organisation and whether there’s anything that can be improved.

NORRiC will also encourage Indigenous employees to take advantage of any training and career development opportunities your organisation have on offer to better their careers and create a more productive employee.
